I think that one can find a couple of links between both
of Chopin's short stories. The depiction of women being able to act on their autonomy
or consider a life where this freedom is activated is a similarity in both female
protagonists of both stories. I also think that another link between both is the
display of how freedom plays a role in the consciousness of the individual. When Louise
is able to consider a life where her freedom is, she understands how to "live life." It
provides a moment of joy for her consciousness. In "The Storm," Calixta seizes a moment
with Alcee. In the end, we can see how both protagonists either capture a particular
moment in their own lives where freedom is enacted or seek that moment where autonomy is
present. In both depictions, female protagonists break out of a structured and
stratified consciousness and hope to move into a new domain where consciousness has new
meaning present.
