What might have caused some people to become loyalists?

There were many possible reasons why an American colonist
at the time of the American Revolution might become (or remain) a loyalist (also called
a Tory).  Here are a few:

  • Loyalty.  After all,
these were people who were born and raised as English.  They had been swearing
allegiance all their lives to England.  Is it any wonder some would remain loyal to what
    they had always been?

  • Money.  Some people made their
livings trading with the English.  Such people would have had a financial interest in
    remaining loyal.

  • Rivalries.  There were some people who
were rivals of patriots.  If there were someone in your town who you really hated or who
was your competitor and they took one side, you might tend to take the
    other.
