What methods does Magwitch use to help Pip develop into a gentleman?Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

After Pip's charity to the "man in coarse gray," Magwitch, who
has been a mere product of the streets of London, never forgets the human kindness of little Pip
who has felt pity for the man who shivered on the marshes, wearing a heavy leg iron. So, after he
is sent to New South Wales, Magwitch, who is alone in the world, saves his wages and sends Pip
money. When good fortune finally touches him with the death of the man for whom he has worked,
the old convict then amasses a small fortune which he bestows upon
Pip.


But, it is through his inadvertent acts that Magwitch truly
teaches Pip to become a gentleman in the Victorian sense of the word. That is, Pip matures and
becomes a man, gentle and sympathetic to others. In much the same way that he reacted in the
graveyard as a child, Pip is initially repulsed by the appearance of the old convict. When
Magwitch takes his hands, puts them to his lips, and tells Pip that he, in fact, is the young
man's benefactor, Pip is dismayed and sickened:

The abhorrence in which I held the man, the dread I had of
him, the repugnance with which I shrank from him, could not have exceeded if he had been some
terrible beast.



However, once Pip
realizes the cruel past of Magwitch, his sympathies are aroused, again much as they were in the
graveyard so many years prior to this meeting:

He regarded me with a look of affection that mede him
almost abhorrent to me again, though I had felt great pity for
him.



In further sympathy for Magwitch,
Pip worries that Compeyson should discover his return to London; therefore, he solicits the aid
of Herbert in getting the old convict out of London. Unfortunately, their attempt to get him out
via the river fails and the hapless Magwitch is badly injured in a terrible struggle overboard
and underwater with the heinous Compeyson. Pip takes his place by Magwitch's side as he is put on
board and reflects, "I felt that that was my place henceforth while he lived." With great
compassion, Pip tells Magwitch,

"I will never stir from your side....Please God, I will be
as true to you as you have been to me!"



This, then, is Pip's true initiation
into the state of being a gentleman. From Magwitch, then, Pip has learned to appreciate the love
of another human being; he has learned compassion, and he has learned that the bounty of a heart
can be in the poorest and most wretched of men. Again Pip learns the difference between
appearances and reality; Magwitch has taught him this valuable lesson that no clothes or money
can ever demonstrate.

What were steps that led to US long-term involvement in overseas military commitments?

There were many steps that were involved in moving the US
towards long-term commitments to an overseas presence. These could
include:


  • The creation of NATO. This committed the US to
    defending Western Europe from the Soviet Union. This led to the creation and maintenance of US
    bases in places like Germany and Turkey.

  • The Korean War. This led
    the US to station troops in South Korea on a permanent basis. These troops remain there today.
    This also, one could argue, led the US to keep large military bases in places like the
    Philippines, Japan, and Guam.

  • The French surrender at Dien Bien
    Phu and their subsequent withdrawal from Vietnam. This led to the US putting more and more
    military personnel into the country, culminating in the massive buildup after
    1964.

For the Chicago Style, if I am citing multiple pages from one website do I have to cite each page separately or can I just cite the website?

The Chicago Style offers two reference systems. The fist
reference system is referred to as the Notes-Bibliography system, or NB system. This
system is favored by humanities scholars. The second Chicago Style reference system is
the author-date system, which is preferred by science scholars. Both systems require the
scholar to reference page numbers in every citation, but the citations will be of a
different style.

With respect to the NB system, for every source
cited, the scholar will also need to create either a footnote at the bottom of the page
on which the source appears, or to create an endnote at the end of each chapter or at
the end of the entire document. Each footnote or endnote will list the bibliographical
information for the source and will be marked by a subscript number that corresponds to
the subscript number in the body of the document, at the end of the sentence in which
the source is cited.

In the first footnote you create for a source
that appears more than once in the text, such as a website, you will need to include all
biographical information, including author, title, publishing data, and page numbers.
But the second and additional times that the source is cited, you will only need to
include author's surname, the first four words of the title, and the page numbers. Be
sure to always cite the page numbers in your footnotes or endnotes.

If you are using the NB system, You will not, however, need to cite
the page numbers again in the Bibliography.  The Bibliography will only require author's
name, title, and all publishing data.

For the science scholars the
author-date system is very similar. The biggest difference is that after you refer to
the source in the text, you will put your citation reference in parentheses at the end
of the sentence. The parenthetical citation will include the author's last name, year of
publication, and the page number.

But again, for the Bibliography, you
will not need to reference the page numbers of your source. The Bibliography will still
only include the author, tittle, and publishing data.

To summarize,
whether you are using the Chicago Manual of Style note-bibliography style, or the
author-date style, you will need to cite the page numbers for
every page of
every source used, including every
page of your website. You will not, however, need to repeat the page number information
in your Bibliography

Can someone please explain section 4 of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" to me? Specially the paragraph where it says something about a bending...

I love Whitman's "Song of Myself," but I have the hardest
time explaining it to anyone.


Section 4 seems like much of
the poem, focusing on a wide range of things recollected or perceived by the speaker,
who is somehow able to transcend all limits and offers glimpses of the past, present,
and future.


This section, like the poem as a whole, is full
of suggestive references. The phrase "horrors of fratricidal war" is almost certainly a
reference to the American Cvil War, which was raging while Whitman was continuing to
expand and revise Leaves of Grass.


You
asked specifically about the "bending arm." Here are a few lines from that part of the
poem:



Apart
from the pulling and hauling stands what I am,
Stands amused, complacent,
compassionating, idle, unitary,
Looks down, is erect, or bends an arm on an
impalpable certain rest,
Looking with side-curved head curious what will come
next,
Both in and out of the game and watching and wondering at
it.



The speaker here is not
part of the bustling world of America. He is "amused, complacent... idle..." One of the
reasons I like Whitman, I suppose, is that he writes against the Puritan doctrines that
have so strongly shaped American culture; for example, he celebrates the body and the
value of not working and not feeling guilty
about failing to be productive all the time. The "bending arm" is part of this pose
struck by the poem's speaker. You can picture him lying on the ground, with one arm bent
and his head resting in his hand. The arm is not engaged in any sort of gainful work at
the moment. The speaker is more than happy to observe and reflect on what he
observes.


The bent arm is also used in one of Whitman's
most famous likenesses, which appears in many editions of Leaves of
Grass
. Do a Google image search of "Leaves of Grass" and you'll see the poet
standing, head tilted and hat cocked at an angle, one hand in his pant pocket and the
other (with bent arm) resting on his hip.
