In A Thousand Splendid Suns, love always
triumphs over adversity. For example, when Laila moves into the home of Rasheed and Mariam, the
two women are at odds. However, they eventually form an alliance, and the two stand strong
against Rasheed. When Laila is strangled by Rasheed, Mariam is driven by her love for Laila to
stand up for her. Mariam kills Rasheed to save her friend. Mariam's love for Laila and her two
children then drives her to turn herself in to the authorities, allowing Laila and the children
to escape. Later, Laila's intense love for her childhood lover Tariq brings the two back
together again, and they form a family in midst of strife. The novel is set against the backdrop
of war and suffering; however, the characters still manage to let love drive their best
intentions.
