Chapter 16 presents the reader with the opening of the
trial, and the children move between their house and the
courtroom.
At breakfast the family discuss the dramatic
events of the previous night, where Scout managed unwittingly to prevent a lynching at
the jail.
The three children - Jem, Scout and Dill
- observe the mixture of people arriving for the trial from the back garden of the Finch
house before slipping out to the courthouse themselves. They are given access to the
upstairs seating by Reverend Sykes and take their places to watch the
trial.
