After the city is destroyed, Granger makes references to the
mythical phoenix, which is a bird that "...every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of the
ashes, he got himself born all over again" (Bradbury 163). In other words, the bird would be
reborn after it had been destroyed.
This symbol is obviously
significant to the story because Granger believes the city can be "reborn" as well after it has
been destroyed. He says they will bury all of the old culture in a mass grave, then begin a new
society.
